@OUAZMVB Takes the Siena Heights Tournament 4-0

The Spirit were undefeated this weekend at the Siena Heights Tournament


ADRIAN, Mich. - The Ottawa University men's volleyball defeated Campbellsville University 3-1 and Siena Heights University 3-1 today in the final day of the Siena Heights Tournament. Final scores against Campbellsville were 25-17, 22-25, 25-15, 25-23 and against Siena Heights were 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 25-20.

With the wins, the Spirit improve their record to 13-10.

Early Saturday morning the Spirit faced the Tigers of Campbellsville University. Game one began with attack errors from both sides as each team found their rhythm. The Spirit benefitting more from those errors by the Tigers and were able to pull ahead to a five-point lead. OUAZ's offense took off and ended game one with an eight-point lead at 25-17. Game two the Tigers fought back early to keep the Spirit on their heels. Campbellsville held the lead in game two and won it 25-22.

In the wake of the game two loss, the Spirit shook things up and game out forcefully. Making minimal errors and executing their strategy they doubled their opponent's points 18-9 and finished the game 25-15. In the final game of the match, the Tigers put up a good effort taking the lead early and forcing the Spirit to match their score throughout the game. But OUAZ was not going to let this game pass. At 22-23 the Spirit made moves to win with a kill by James Yahner and Timothy Gerdes and an error from the Tigers to seal the win.

Joaquin Santa Cruz dominated from the serving line with four aces and no errors and led his team with 16 digs for the match.

In match two of the day, the Spirit played the host team Siena Heights University Saints. Game one the Saints were able to strike first, and for most of the game, both teams battled for the lead. In the end, the Spirit took the game 25-20.

Game two followed similarly with the Saints striking first, but this time they held the lead for the game and finished it 25-20 in their favor. In game three the Spirit used errors to stay in the game and were able to overcome the lead that the Saints took early to win the game 25-23. In the final game of the match, OUAZ turned up the intensity, jumping ahead and staying ahead for the length of the match. The Spirit used errors from the Saints to further their lead and end the game 25-20.

Chris Brown earned three service aces for the Spirit, and Andrew De'Leon gathered 40 assists for the match.
