ADRIAN, Mich. - The Ottawa University men's volleyball team won both of their games on day one of the Siena Heights Tournament. OUAZ beat Judson University 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-19) and Lawrence Tech 3-2 (25-20, 28-30, 21-25, 25-17, 15-12).
With the wins, the Spirit move onto day two of competition with a record of 12-9.
In match one of the Siena Heights Tournament, the Spirit faced the Eagles of Judson University. It was a quick one-two-three for the Spirit. Game one the Judson Eagles fought to stick with the Spirit and jumped ahead in the middle of the game only using some errors from the Spirit. But the Spirit found their rhythm and overcame the Eagles to win 25-19.
Game two started similarly, the Eagles taking a mid-game lead and the Spirit finishing the job 25-20. In the final game of the match, OUAZ looked more like themselves. Getting ahead early and staying ahead to win the game and match 25-19.
OUAZ dominated from the serving line with five aces for the game.
In match two of the day, OUAZ took Lawrence Tech to five sets for the win. OUAZ took the first game
25-20 using their offense and a .457 hitting percentage to give them a game lead. Game two the
Lawrence Tech Blue Devils fought back narrowly beating the Spirit in bonus points, 30-28. Game three the Blue Devils rode their wave of momentum from the second match to win the third 25-21.
Game four the Spirit turned up the heat keeping the Blue devils at an average 0 hitting percentage while taking their own to a .407. They won the fourth set 25-17 and used that momentum to win the final set 15-12.
The Spirit dominated at the net with 15 blocks to the Blue Devils nine,
Seth Golleher leading with 8.
Andrew de'Leon collected 64 assists for the game, and three OUAZ hitters claimed double-digit kills for the game.
The Spirit play tomorrow in day two of the Siena Heights Tournament. At 7:00 am (Arizona Time) they play Campbellsville University and finish the day at 11:00 am (Arizona Time) playing Siena Heights University.
