SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's basketball team will head into the holiday break after snapping a four-game losing streak with a 59-52 win over Lincoln Christian on Monday night at Willow Canyon High School.
OUAZ (5-4) picked up the win in the team's only game during a 21-day span on the December calendar. The Spirit trailed Lincoln Christian (4-7) for only 14 seconds all night.
After building a 47-33 lead with 2:56 to play in the third quarter, OUAZ went cold for a stretch as the visitors from Illinois went on a 19-4 run that included the final 14 points to take their first lead of the night at 52-51 with 3:22 remaining in the game.
The Spirit would turn the tide the rest of the game, scoring the final eight points and holding the Red Lions to no baskets on four shots and forcing three turnovers. OUAZ converted 6 of 9 at the foul line during the run to help ice an important home win.
Jorie Mayfield recorded her first double-double of the season by leading the Spirit with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Her seventh career double-double came on 5 of 11 shooting and with three steals and a school-record tying four blocked shots.
The Spirit shot 28.8 percent as a team with five made 3-pointers. They grabbed 57 rebounds and had 13 assists. Lincoln Christian ended the night shooting 26.5 percent and just 1 of 15 from beyond the arc. OUAZ set a school record with 10 blocked shots.
Bailey Osmer added 10 points and five rebounds for OUAZ.
Celeste Lira led the way with four assists and
Mickey Freeman also blocked four shots.
LCU grabbed 63 rebounds and scored 12 points from 24 offensive rebounds. Abigail Crockett led the Red Lions with 12 points while Shayla McCormick and Lucy Waid each grabbed 16 rebounds.
OUAZ will return to action following the holiday break on December 29 when they host Bethesda at noon at Willow Canyon High School.
