Spirit Rally Late to Down Flames in Overtime

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's basketball team shook off the rust of the holiday break and rallied late to defeat Bethesda 110-94 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Willow Canyon High School.

OUAZ (6-4) set a school record for points in a game as they had four players score 20-plus points and six reach double figures in the win. The Spirit also made 16 3-pointers to set another school record at a 44.4 percent clip from deep. Their 38 made baskets was the third school record of the day and they tallied 23 assists to rank second in school history.

Despite the record setting effort, it was Bethesda (0-20) that went on a 20-2 run that began late in the third quarter and ended with the Flames scoring 14 straight points to lead 84-72 with 6:00 minutes to play. Down 10 with under two minutes on the clock, Jorie Mayfield started the Sprit's late rally with an and-one at the 1:53 mark to pull the team within seven. The foul forced Bethesda to play the rest of the game with only four players.

With the advantage, OUAZ outscored Bethesda 27-6, including 17-1 in overtime when the Flames were down to three players for the final 3:26. Despite playing with one more player, it took a layup from Marissa Copley with 1.7 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Bailey Osmer scored nine of her team-high 26 points in the extra period to notch her third 20-point game of the season. She also dished out four assists – including on the game-tying layup by Copley – and took six steals with eight rebounds. Mayfield finished with 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the year.

Caronda Yazzie scored 21 points on Saturday after entering the game with only two points all season. She hit four 3-pointers to match the four hit Kyra Tucker in her 13-point outing. Alexis Smith made five threes and finished with 20 points and eight rebounds. Copley ended the day with 10 points and six rebounds.

OUAZ had a 40-28 advantage in the paint and they scored 20 points from 15 offensive rebounds. The Spirit shot 42.7 percent from the floor and got 31 points from 24 Bethesda turnovers. The Flames would shoot 46.1 percent and hit 13 threes. They outrebounded the Spirit 51-47.

Sydney Gray scored a game-high 36 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Victoria Sosa added 30 points and Tiffany Lucci scored 20 for the Flames. Demitra Kouretas finished with 13 assists.

The Spirit will play their next four games on the road in Golden State Athletic Conference play. That stretch begins on Thursday with a game at No. 1 Vanguard.
