SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season on Thursday when No. 10 Westmont came away with a 4-0 win in Golden State Athletic Conference play at Spirit Field.
OUAZ (11-4-2, 3-2-2 GSAC) had won the first seven games they played at home this season.
Westmont (12-1-2, 5-1-1) went ahead in the 14th minute when Bri Johnson scored on a rebound from a shot by Maddi Berthoud that was saved by Spirit keeper
Addison Riddle. The visiting Warriors added a second goal in the 36th minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Any chance OUAZ had at a rally went away when Westmont scored twice in 22 seconds during the 52nd minute. The two goals doubled the visitors advantage to 4-0.
OUAZ took just four shots in the game with two from
Sydnee Busby and one apiece for
Keana Barrow and
Shania Maddux. Busby and Maddux had one shot on goal apiece.
Westmont took 17 shots and had 10 shots on goal.
Riddle played 79 minutes in goal and took the loss with five saves.
Krysten Caballeros finished the game with one stop.
Thursday's loss drops the Spirit into a tie for fourth in the GSAC standings with one game to play. They will host The Master's at Spirit Field on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. with a chance to pass the Mustangs in the final standings.
