FULLERTON, Calif. – The OUAZ women's volleyball team dropped a five set match at Hope International on Saturday afternoon after the home team rallied to win the final two sets of the match.
OUAZ (10-11, 5-8 GSAC) held a 2-1 set lead after winning the first and third, only to have Hope International (13-11, 6-6) comeback to win 20-25, 26-24, 26-28, 25-22, 15-13. The match was almost a close as possible with two sets going extra points and all being decided by five points or less.
The Spirit totaled 64 kills and hit .142 as a team on the day. They had three players record double figures in kills and were led by 18 kills from
Jorie Mayfield.
Austin Edwards added 15 kills while
Gianna Kioa finished with 13.
The two teams combined for 213 digs with OUAZ holding the slight edge at 107-106. That included a school record 50 digs from
Seleni Bartley. That is tied for the second-most digs in a match by any player in the NAIA this season. It's also the most digs by a GSAC player during the time of available records dating back to the 2012 season.
The loss has OUAZ in seventh-place in the GSAC standings with five conference matches remaining. The Spirit are home next weekend for a pair of matches, starting on Friday when they host William Jessup at 7 p.m. at Willow Canyon High School.
