SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Ottawa University Arizona Softball team finished day two of the Anderson/OUAZ Spirit Classic with a loss to the College of Idaho and a win over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Final scores were 3-8 vs. College of Idaho and 12-8 vs. ERAU.
With the win and loss, the Spirit move on with a 1-2 record.
In the first game of the day for the Spirit, OUAZ was first to get on the board in the first inning with
Amanda Almond scoring on a fielding error by the center-fielder of the Yotes. The College of Idaho took back OUAZ's early lead with three RBI hits to make the score 3-1.
In the sixth, both teams found the holes in their opponent's defense. The Yotes scored four runs with a three-run RBI and a single hit. The Spirit followed in the bottom of the sixth with the second home run of the weekend by
Vanessa Rodarte to drive
Ashton Aggers and herself in for two runs. In the seventh, the Yotes countered with their home run, and the game ended 8-3 in favor of the Yotes.
Game two of the day the Spirit battled the Eagles of Embry-Riddle (AZ). The Eagles scored first on a triple pushing two runs in and a sacrifice fly ball to earn their third for the first inning.
The Spirit countered with three runs of their own.
Miranda Davis scored after stealing second base and a wild pitch.
Amanda Almond scored with a steal to second on a wild pitch and scored on a wild pitch while
Emily Stebbins was up to bat.
Vanessa Rodarte scored the third run of the inning, again off of a wild pitch giving the Spirit the opportunity to tie the game.
The Eagles scored a run in the second, but the Spirit responded in the third with three more runs keeping the bases loaded and taking good swings. The Eagles came back in the fourth with three runs and fifth with one run to take the lead. In the sixth inning, the Spirit made big moves, scoring six runs.
Emily Stebbins scored on a walk for
KaeLynn Miller,
Gabrielle Rodriguez scored on
Miranda Davis' single, and
KaeLynn Miller and
Miranda Davis would both score on
Amanda Almond's single. The last two runs of the game that would give OUAZ the win were scored by
Ashton Aggers and
Amanda Almond with the help of
Emily Stebbins single to left field.
This was the first win in OUAZ Softball history and the completion of the first weekend of competition.
Emily Stebbins hit .500, .500 slugging, and OB% of nearly .600 for the weekend.
