@OUAZSB Finishes Day One of the Spirit Classic 0-2

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Ottawa University Arizona Softball team was defeated by Embry-Riddle (AZ) and the College of Idaho in day one of the OUAZ/Anderson Spirit Classic. Final scores are 4-8 vs. Embry-Riddle (AZ) and 4-7 vs. the College of Idaho.

With day one of the Classic complete, the Spirit move on to day 2 with a 0-2 record.

In the first game of the day, the first game of the season and the first official game of OUAZ softball, the Spirit competed against the Eagles of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

In the opening inning, both teams scored runs. The Eagles led the inning with a double hit to left field and a single RBI to bring in the runner. The Spirit followed in the bottom of the first with a single hit by Miranda Davis that led to a couple of opportunities for steals to third and home to even the score.

The Eagles were able to score two more runs in the top of the third inning, but the Spirit came back to score three runs between the fourth and fifth to lead the game by one. In the fourth, Chelsey Runyon added to the comeback with the first home run hit in OUAZ Softball history, to the left side field at a distance of about 210ft. IN the bottom of the fifth, Ashton Aggers hit the RBI to tie the score 3-3, and Vanessa Rodarte ran her teammate in for the 4-3 lead with a double. In the sixth, the Eagles were able to pull away and score six runs to defeat the Spirit 8-4.

Game two of the day the Spirit took on the Yotes of the College of Idaho. The Spirit were the first on the scoreboard with a single hit by Savannah Brown and a fumble at first by the Yotes giving Emily Stebbins the run into the home. The Yotes scored in the fourth tying the game 1-1. The Spirit took back the lead with a double hit by Miranda Davis to drive KaeLynn Miller into home to earn run number two to the Yote's one.

The College of Idaho would go on to score 6 runs in the top of the sixth, leading into the seventh inning 7-2. But the Spirit fought to close the gap scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh with bases loaded off of a wild pitch. The Yotes would hold onto their lead to end the game 7-4.

The Spirit play both teams again Saturday for Day Two of the OUAZ/Anderson Spirit Classic.
