BENEDICTINE EDGES OUT SPIRIT IN FIVE SETS

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Ottawa University Arizona women's volleyball team lost to Benedictine University (AZ) in five games (25-21, 18-25, 18-25, 26-24, 14-16).

With the loss, the Spirit move on to 2-6 overall on the season.

In game one of the match the Spirit came out strong matching the Benedictine Redhawks point for point until half way through the game. They captured the power and continued keeping Benedictine on their heels, much to the Redhawks frustration to win the match 25-21. Game two Benedictine caught the momentum and pulled ahead early to win 25-18. Game three OUAZ stayed with Benedictine for most of the game, but in the last points the Redhawks made a push to finish the game 25-18 forcing the match to four sets. In the fourth game, the Spirit stayed ahead for the entire match. The Spirit got to 23-17 when the Redhawks made their move to take the game, but OUAZ fought hard to win the match 26-24. In the final game of the match the Spirit were first to 5 and first to 10. Benedictine caught up at 12 and the OUAZ caught up at 14 to make this an intense and back-and-forth game. The Redhawks took the opportunities of OUAZ errors to win the game 16-14.

The Spirit utilized Jessica Youngberg (JR/Peoria, AZ) and Carlee Beck(SO/Des Moines, Iowa) as both setting and hitting options. Jessica Youngberg finished the match with 35 assists and Carlee Beckhad 10 digs for the match. Gilly Muniz (SO/Westminster, CO) had three blocks for and three kills for the match. Kelsey Marchant (JR/Powell, WY) collected 21 digs and two service aces. Kill leaders for the match were Nicole Newman (FR/Avondale, AZ) and Kylie Greenway(SO/Riverside, CA) with 13 kills each and Jorie Mayfield (JR/Tempe, AZ) followed with six.

The Spirit play at Home, Thursday September 14, 2017, at Valley Vista High School at 6:00pm against SAGU American Indian College.
