EL CAJON, Calif. - The Ottawa University Arizona women's volleyball team defeated San Diego Christian College 3-2 on Wednesday evening in El Cajon, California. Final scores were: 25-22,18-25, 25-23, 22-25, and 15-11. With the win the Spirit improve to 10-12 overall.
"This was a good win for us," Head Coach Kristin Steele commented. She continued, "We had a great opportunity to win in four games, but made some late set mistakes that took us into a fifth set. We rebounded well in that final game and earned the win." This was also a fun travel trip for the team as Coach Steele recalled, "The girls really came together as a team on this trip and that was fun to see!"
The match started with a battle for game one. Both teams went back and forth attempting to pull away. In game two San Diego Christian responded gaining the lead early and holding it to the end. The Hawks used errors from OUAZ to extend their lead and finish the game 25-18. Game three was similar to game one with both teams working hard to leave the other behind, but the Spirit made less errors and used their offense to push ahead and finish at the end of the game giving them the win at 25-23. Carlee Beck (SO/Des Moines, Iowa) led the final push with a service ace and the win was decided by a solid block from Amanda Wick (FR/Glendale, AZ) and Jorie Mayfield. In game four errors by the Spirit gave the Hawks the early lead, but OUAZ turned the game around forcing the Hawks to make errors. In the end of the game with the score tied 22-22, the Hawks used the momentum of their offense to hold the Spirit and advance to 25-22. In the final game of the match the Spirit lead using some strong offensive moves to pull ahead, but the Hawks made their move to tie the game 10-10.
