COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Ottawa University Arizona Spirit women's volleyball team fell to the Vanguard University Lions in four sets on Tuesday evening. Final scores were 25-21, 11-25, 15-25, 11-25.
Head Coach Kristin Steele had this to say after the match, "I am pleased with our performance for this match. Taking a set off of Vanguard shows the improvement this team has made over the last month through their effort and hard work."
Game one was a battle for both teams to gain momentum and pull ahead. In total both sides tied the score 11 times. In the end of game one, it was setting and hitting errors made by the Lions and well timed kills from the Spirit that gave OUAZ the game 25-21. Game two Vanguard wasted no time jumping ahead to 5-1 with service aces and a strong offense. They continued to earn service aces and kills to keep their lead and win the game 25-11. Game three started similarly with the Lions jumping ahead out of the gate, but the Spirit fought back with more kills and fewer errors to earn 15 points to the Lion's 25. In the fourth and final set of this match, the Lions took advantage of OUAZ hitting errors to gain the early lead. Vanguard capitalized on their strong serving and strategic offense to control and win the game, 25-11, and the match overall. It was a good match for the Spirit who upset a GSAC leader with their early win in game one and forced a dominate team to make unanticipated changes.
