MESA, Ariz. - The OUAZ women's volleyball team lost in three sets on the road at Benedictine University at Mesa on Tuesday evening. Final scores were 25-17, 25-20, 26-24. With this loss the Spirit drop to 7-10 overall on the season.
"Last night, we ran into a solid BenU team who had great momentum that we were unable to diffuse," commented Head Coach Kristin Steele. "Their outside hitters dominated and their tough serves had us scrambling for control. After playing them at home, we were disappointed with our performance at their gym. However, our middles were an important part of our offense when we were in system and they were able to score several points in clutch times."
She went on to say, "on a separate note, last night was the last match for our varsity reserve team who has shown great improvement throughout this season. I am particularly impressed with the improvement of Camila Trovato (FR/Surprise, AZ) and Adara Greathouse (FR/Surprise, AZ) as well as the improvement in McKenna Crank (FR/Payson, AZ) who stepped in as setter after injuries sidelined several players."
To the start the Varsity match, OUAZ jumped ahead to an early, but untimely lead. The Redhawks came back to take the lead and utilized their strong offense to finish the game 25-17. Game two of the match the Spirit gained an early lead and held on until point 20 where the Redhawks made their move on an 8-0 point run to finish the game 25-20. Game three of the match the momentum was up for grabs. Both teams fought back and forth to pull ahead. The Redhawks offense proved more consistent and helped BenU Mesa finish the game and the match 26-24.
The Spirit play West Coast Baptist and Mills College, Saturday October 20th, at West Coast Baptist at 1:30pm and 4:00pm respectively.
