(#8) SPIRIT DRAW WITH BENU MESA 1-1

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The 8th ranked Ottawa University Arizona women's soccer team drew with the cross-town rival Benedictine University at Mesa Redhawks on Saturday evening by a final of 1-1 in double overtime at the CCV Surprise Soccer Field.

With the draw on Saturday evening, BenU Mesa moves to 5-5-2 overall, while OUAZ moves to 7-6-1 overall.

Saturday's contest between the Redhawks and Spirit was similar to the match played in Mesa back on September 14th, when BenU Mesa claimed the 1-0 victory. In the latest game between the cross-town rivals, the homestanding Spirit caught a break in the first half, off a throw-in. The pass went into the box and slipped past Redhawks goalkeeper Tiana Pretzer, to give OUAZ the early 1-0 lead. That lead would hold for the Spirit as the teams head into halftime.

In the second half, BenU Mesa came out and attacked the Spirit early on and it paid off. In the 69th minute, Olivia Ceballos found Madison Ross off a corner-kick to even the match at 1-1. The two teams continued to fight, but found themselves still tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes of play.

The Redhawks and Spirit would head to sudden-death overtime; however neither team could score in either of the 10-minute periods. BenU Mesa and OUAZ ended Saturday in a 1-1 draw.

Overall, BenU Mesa outshot OUAZ 21-6. The Redhawks attempted eight corner-kicks, while the Spirit didn't get off a single one.

In the draw, Spirit goalkeeper Emily Kriplean (JR/Peoria, AZ) finished with nine saves, while playing all 110 minutes.

The 8th ranked Spirit will take the week to rest and prepare for Shepherd University, who come to Surprise next Saturday October 21st for a 7:30pm match.
