Matt Smith

Matt Smith joined the Women’s Soccer Staff at Ottawa University AZ as an assistant in Spring 2017.

Matt’s collegiate experience includes time as both the assistant and associate head coach for the Women’s programs at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Arizona.  During Matt’s 14 seasons, CGCC compiled a record of 183-85-16 and appeared in 7 Conference Championship games.  CGCC was 13-65-1 in the five seasons before Matt’s arrival.  Prior to CGCC, Matt was the Head Coach at South Mountain Community College for 4 seasons, leading SMCC to their only two playoff appearances in program history and currently still stands as the all-time leader in wins and winning percentage for SMCC’s women.  Matt’s first women’s collegiate coaching experience was at Northwestern State University (LA).  As an assistant in 1998, Northwestern State completed one of the 10 best turnaround seasons in NCAA Division I history going over .500 after two seasons of winning a total of 2 games.

In addition to coaching collegiately, Matt has been the Head Coach at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, Arizona.  Over 17 seasons at Corona, Matt has led the Aztecs to a record of 262-96-28, making him the winningest girls high school soccer coach in Arizona history.  His teams have won 2 state championships and finished twice as the state finalists.  In addition, Matt has won 4 club state championships and finished as state finalists 11 times.

Prior to coaching, Matt played collegiately at MacMurray College (’95) in Jacksonville, Illinois and at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Arizona.  Matt has his Juris Doctorate from Arizona State University Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law (’98).  Matt and his wife Patti reside in Gilbert, AZ with their two sons Kaden and Conor and their dog Schmitty.
