Wellington Afusia

Wellington Afusia, also known as Coach Beef by the OUAZ community, is entering his first year as the head coach of the OUAZ Spirit, bringing with him a wealth of experience and success in the world of volleyball.

Originally from Carson, California, Afusia first started playing volleyball at the age of 14 for Carson High School where he helped earn the first ever City Championship in school history and earned 4 medals at nationals while playing at The HBC Volleyball Club. After his high school and club career, Afusia went on to pursue his college degree at Grand Canyon University on an academic scholarship and started the GCU club volleyball team while majoring in Business Management with minors in Accounting, Finance, and Economics.

As a coach, Wellington has worked with a variety of teams and players, including as a Coach with Victorium Volleyball Club since 2018, where he helped guide teams to success at the regional level. He has also worked in multiple camps in clinics throughout Arizona over the last 6 years trying to grow the game of volleyball throughout the valley, further demonstrating his commitment to coaching and helping others improve their skills.

Wellington's coaching journey led him to OUAZ in 2019, where he started as a Graduate Assistant before quickly rising to the position of Full-Time assistant coach. His coaching prowess was instrumental in helping the team secure their first-ever conference championship in 2022 and the teams second national championship in the NCCAA. Afusia has helped shaped the Spirit into a dominant force during his time here at OUAZ as they have been Nationally ranked in the top 5 since 2022 making 3 National Tournament appearances and awarding multiple All-Americans in those years.

In 2022 & 2024 NAIA Wellington was named the Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Most importantly as a man of faith, Wellington's beliefs and values align closely with those of Ottawa University Arizona as he is dedicated to creating an environment that fosters spiritual growth, character development, and service to others.

Wellington’s wife, Olivia, is the Women’s Volleyball Head Coach at OUAZ. Olivia and Wellington are active members of Christ's Church of the Valley and currently reside in Peoria with their 2 dogs, Stacy and Stanley.
