Shawn Byrnes is in his third season as the offensive line coach at OUAZ in 2020. He joined the Spirit staff after spending three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Scottsdale Christian Academy.

Under Byrnes’ leadership, the OUAZ offensive line has anchored the OUAZ offense that has gained 506 yards per game and finished third in the NAIA in total offense during the 2019 season. They also were fifth in the country in sacks allowed, giving up nine on 502 pass attempts. Byrnes has coached on AFCA-NAIA Honorable Mention All-American in Tristan Shehorn and four Sooner all-conference selections.

Byrnes started his coaching career as the offensive line coach at Paradise Valley High School for four seasons. He then spent two years as the assistant offensive line coach at Arizona Christian University before taking the job at Scottsdale Christian.

A four-year letter winner at Texas Tech, Byrnes played in 33 games with 21 starts for the Red Raiders. Those teams compiled a 37-15 overall record and went 3-1 in bowl games with appearances in the Insight Bowl, Gator Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and Alamo Bowl.

Byrnes earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise & Sports Science from Texas Tech and a master’s in Arts in Leadership from OUAZ.
