Aoyagi most recently coached at Claremont Mudd Scripps where he was part of a defensive coaching staff that led a unit which allowed just 9.2 points and 211.9 yards per game (including only 62.0 rushing yards) and did not allow a touchdown in five of their nine contests. CMS ranked seventh in the country in total defense and scoring defense, 18th in pass efficiency defense, and 22nd in passing yards allowed.

Coach Aoyagi's defensive line unit earned several individual accolades, Defensive end Joey Asta was also a two-time National Team of the Week selection and was chosen to the All-SCIAC first team, while defensive tackle Tyson-Jay Saena earned a spot on the second team. Defensive end Michael Houk, meanwhile, captured the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year Award, helping CMS record 25 quarterback sacks on the year. 

Aoyagi joined the Stags after spending one season at Bowdoin College, where he coached defensive backs. Previously, he worked at Blinn College in Texas, where he was also the defensive backs coach.

Aoyagi also has some Division I experience under his belt, spending one year as the defensive backs quality control coach at Oregon State University and two years coaching Quarterbacks and Running backs at Southern Utah University. 
 
He also has extensive experience at the high school level in Arizona, Hawaii, and Utah with experience on both sides of the ball, working nine seasons as an offensive coordinator and five as a defensive coordinator with one season as a head coach.  In his final high school stint, he spent a few seasons as defensive coordinator for the Marcos De Niza High School football team in Tempe, Arizona, helping his team make the playoffs every year, including an appearance in the state championship in 2015. 

Aoyagi earned his Bachelor's degree from Weber State University and his Master's  degree from Concordia University Irvine.Â
