Surprise, Ariz. — OUAZ women's soccer put together a dominant performance on Senior Night, rolling to a 12-0 victory over Nelson (Ariz.) on Tuesday evening at Spirit Field. The win marks the Spirit's first victory of the 2026 season and improves their record to 1-3-3 overall.
OUAZ wasted little time taking control of the match, scoring eight goals in the opening half. Grace Otero opened the scoring before Desiree Dutra added the second. Otero struck again later in the half, while Jocelyn Smith found the back of the net twice. Alee Williams and Janessa Lugo also scored as the Spirit carried an 8-0 lead into the break.
The Spirit continued their offensive onslaught in the second half. Smith completed her hat trick early in the period, Otero added her third goal of the evening to finish off a hat trick of her own, and Ailish Carey joined the scoring column. Dutra netted her second goal of the match before Kylie Walker capped the scoring to give OUAZ a 12-0 victory.
Otero led the attack with three goals and three assists, while Smith added a hat trick of her own. Dutra finished with two goals and two assists, and Williams contributed a goal and an assist. Walker, Lugo, and Carey each scored once as the Spirit produced their highest offensive output of the season.
The OUAZ defense was equally impressive, holding Nelson off the scoreboard and limiting the Warriors' opportunities throughout the night. Goalkeeper Eerika Erjansalo earned the shutout before senior Georgina Hagger entered goal late in the match as part of the Senior Night festivities.
The Spirit will look to carry the momentum into conference play when they travel to face GSAC opponent Benedictine Mesa on Saturday, Sept. 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. as OUAZ looks to build on its first win of the season.
