Surprise, Ariz. – OUAZ men's soccer dropped a 5-1 decision to Park Gilbert on Wednesday night at Spirit Field in GSAC action. The loss moves the Spirit to 1-6-1 overall and 0-3 in GSAC play.
OUAZ generated several early opportunities and put pressure on the Buccaneers through the opening stages of the match. Harry Dwelly tested the goalkeeper in the opening minutes, while the Spirit earned multiple corner kicks as they looked to take an early lead.
Park Gilbert broke through midway through the first half when Olli Saksinen found the back of the net to put the visitors ahead. The Buccaneers added two more goals before halftime, including a second strike from Saksinen and another off an assist from Anton Aaltonen, taking a 3-0 advantage into the break.
The Spirit continued to battle in the second half, but Park Gilbert extended its lead with two more goals. Saksinen completed his four-goal performance early in the half before Brody Donovan added another goal for the Buccaneers.
Despite facing a sizable deficit, OUAZ continued to push forward offensively. Jesus Castillo, Matthew Mossman, and William Donnelly each forced saves from the Park Gilbert goalkeeper as the Spirit searched for a breakthrough.
OUAZ was rewarded late in the match when Thomas Berlinski scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Jasper Jackman. The goal prevented the shutout and provided a highlight for the Spirit in the closing minutes.
Jack Murdoch turned in a busy night in goal, making multiple saves while facing consistent pressure from the Park-Gilbert attack.
