Surprise, Ariz. — It was a tale of two completely different games at Willow Canyon High School as the Spirit battled to a split against Embry-Riddle—dropping game one before delivering an unforgettable comeback win in game two.
Game 1 — OUAZ 0, Embry-Riddle 9 (5inn.)
Game one was all Embry-Riddle from the start. The Eagles jumped on the Spirit early and never looked back, cruising to a 9-0 victory. Big swings, including home runs from Kealey Myhre and Joy Sanchez, powered the Embry-Riddle offense, while Claire Streeter kept OUAZ quiet in the circle, limiting the Spirit to just two hits. Despite Elysa Moreno recording both hits for OUAZ, the Spirit couldn't generate any momentum offensively.
But game two? That was something special.
Game 2 — OUAZ 12, Embry-Riddle 9 (8 inn.)
OUAZ came out swinging early, highlighted by a two-run homer from Brianna Humphries in the first inning. Still, Embry-Riddle answered back and eventually took a late lead, even going up 9-8 in extra innings after a back-and-forth battle filled with momentum swings, defensive miscues, and clutch hitting on both sides.
Then came the moment no one in attendance will forget.
With runners on in the bottom of the 8th, Brianna Humphries stepped up once again—and delivered. She launched her third home run of the game, a walk-off blast to left field that sealed a stunning 12-9 victory for the Spirit. Humphries finished with a historic performance: 3 home runs and 8 RBIs, setting program records for both in a single game.
The Spirit offense exploded for 16 hits in game two, with contributions across the lineup, but it was Humphries who stole the show in one of the most dominant individual performances in OUAZ history.
From a tough shutout loss to an electric walk-off win, this doubleheader perfectly captured the resilience and fire of OUAZ softball.
