OUAZ Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Benedictine Mesa, Winning Streak Ends at Ten

Surprise, Ariz.-- The OUAZ Spirit saw their 10-game winning streak come to an end Friday evening, dropping both games of a GSAC doubleheader to Benedictine Mesa. The losses move OUAZ to 18-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

Game 1: Benedictine Mesa 7, OUAZ 6

The Spirit jumped out to an early lead in the opener when Rolen Driscoll delivered a two-run single in the first inning, scoring Camden Knutson and Isaiah Nava.

Benedictine Mesa quickly responded in the second with back-to-back solo home runs from Ben Schnurman and Tyler Jackson to even the game. The RedHawks took control in the fourth inning when Oliver Davies launched a three-run home run to give Benedictine Mesa a 5-2 advantage.

OUAZ answered in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run rally. Mason Whitehead and Nava each drove in runs with sacrifice bunts before Knutson singled home Matthew Carter to tie the game at 5-5.

The RedHawks regained the lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Javier Rochin and added an insurance run in the eighth on a run-scoring single from Davies. The Spirit pulled within one in the eighth when Manny Morales doubled to bring home Trevor Lesperance, but OUAZ was unable to complete the comeback.

The Spirit totaled 14 hits in the game, led by Evan Mendoza's three-hit performance. Driscoll and Knutson each added two hits and drove in runs in the loss.

Game 2: Benedictine Mesa 6, OUAZ 2 (7 Innings)

Benedictine Mesa carried its momentum into the nightcap, scoring four runs in the first inning to take early control. Tyler Jackson highlighted the frame with a three-run double before Anthony Setticasi followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.

The RedHawks extended the lead with a solo home run by Schnurman in the third and a sacrifice fly from Jack Moore in the fourth to build a 6-0 advantage.

OUAZ broke through in the bottom of the fourth when Driscoll tripled to right-center field to score Carter. Evan Mendoza followed with a sacrifice fly to bring Driscoll home, cutting the deficit to 6-2.

The Spirit were unable to generate additional offense against RedHawks starter Xavier Olivas, who went the distance while allowing five hits and two runs.

Driscoll led the OUAZ offense again with a triple and an RBI, while Camden Knutson, Mason Whitehead, Manny Morales, and Joey Ruiz, each recorded hits.

Despite the setbacks, the Spirit remain near the top of the GSAC standings and will have an opportunity to bounce back quickly.

OUAZ will continue the series against Benedictine Mesa tomorrow night with another doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (MST) at Kansas City Royals Practice Field 6 at the Surprise Spring Training Complex.
