Spirit Use Big Second Inning to Lift Themselves Past Firestorm to Open Series

Surprise, Ariz.-- OUAZ Baseball opened its GSAC series against rival Arizona Christian with a strong 6-2 victory at home, improving to 25-12 overall and 11-6 in conference play.

The Firestorm struck first in the second inning on a solo home run, but the Spirit quickly responded with a four-run frame of their own in the bottom half. Taking advantage of defensive miscues, OUAZ evened the score on a passed ball before Matthew Carter delivered an RBI single to give the Spirit the lead. Mason Whitehead followed with a clutch two-run single, extending the advantage to 4-1 and shifting momentum firmly in OUAZ's favor.

Arizona Christian cut into the deficit in the fifth with an RBI single, but the Spirit answered once again in the bottom of the inning. Chaz Clemons came through with a two-run double down the right field line, pushing the lead to 6-2 and providing valuable insurance.

On the mound, Brandon Enders turned in a solid outing, earning the win after tossing five innings while allowing just two runs on five hits. The bullpen continued the strong performance, as William Fife and Tyler Johnson combined for four scoreless innings to secure the victory.

Offensively, Whitehead led the way with two hits and two RBIs, while Carter added a pair of hits and an RBI. Clemons also contributed with two RBIs in the win.

The Spirit will continue their series against the Firestorm tomorrow with a doubleheader set to begin at 3:00 p.m. (MST) at KC Royals Practice Field 6.
