Spirit Split Doubleheader With Firestorm to Set Themselves Up for Potential Series Win in Finale

Surprise, Ariz.-- OUAZ earned a split today against the ACU Firestorm, winning game one by a score of 5-1 and dropping game two 6-1.

The Spirit got off to a hot start in game one, scoring two runs in the first inning. Evan Mendoza grounded into a double play that brought home Mason Whitehead, and Matthew Carter later scored on a Firestorm wild pitch.

ACU answered with a run in the fourth inning, but the Spirit were quick to respond. Chaz Clemons singled through the right side to score Rolando Ramos Jr., extending the lead to 3-1 in favor of OUAZ.

In the sixth, OUAZ added two more runs on an RBI double from Manny Morales and an RBI single by Trevor Lesperance.

The pitching was dominant for the Spirit in game one. Starter Micah Del Rio turned in a quality start, tossing six innings of one-run ball. He was followed by a shutout inning from Tyler Johnson to close out the win.

Game two, however, did not go OUAZ's way. ACU struck first in the second inning, and the Spirit answered in the bottom half with an RBI double from Matthew Carter. That would be the only offense OUAZ could generate in the game.

Starter Diego Quinonez went 2.1 innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs. The bullpen—Mason Martino, Kasey Regala, Baley Viscardi, and Jackson Brenna—combined for 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs while recording six strikeouts.

OUAZ will look to defend their home field and secure the series tomorrow on Senior Night. Game four against ACU is set for a 5:00 p.m. (MST) first pitch at Surprise Stadium, with Senior Night festivities taking place prior to first pitch.
