MVB Sweeps Park to Continue Strong Start to GSAC Play

Gilbert, Ariz.- After an undefeated homestand, the OUAZ continued their 5-game hot streak with a sweep of Park University Gilbert 25–13, 25–18, and 25–16. The Spirit now sits at 12-3 overall and has a 5-1 record in the tough GSAC.

Sophomore stud Jack Hubbard ran the show tonight with 9 kills, hitting at a .429 efficiency. The GSAC defender of the week not only led the team in kills but also stacked 3 blocks. The Phoenix native continues to make outstanding block adjustments using his high vertical to read hitters' swings midair. His sophomore duo, Owen Draeger, was locked into both the middle and opposite positions tonight. The usual middle blocker was sent to play opposite in set 3 and dominated. Draeger finished with 4 kills, hitting. 500 and had 3 stuff blocks in parts of set 3. Freshman Jackson Blair played opposite in set 2 tonight and took advantage of the opportunity with 4 kills. Vegas native Treven Clizbe was a perfect 3 for 3 tonight, hitting. 1000, while being a menace defensively with 4 block assists, combining with Owen Draeger to form an absolute wall for Buccaneer hitters.

Set 1 was all OUAZ, as the team started the game by forcing 4 Park errors. The team eventually went on a massive 10-2 run, putting the score at 19-9. The run featured almost all Spirit hitters scoring, as Madduxx Goron ran the offense with ease. After three straight Park errors, the team put the set away at 25-13. Following a stellar set one offensively, holding the Buccaneers to a -.100 hitting percentage, the Spirit allowed Park to jump out to a quick lead. Down 10-5, the Spirit, who had taken out some starters, started climbing back. The team went on another extremely long run that ended with 8 straight points and put them up 14-11. Again, in this run, the Spirit defense showed up, forcing the Buccaneer offense into five errors. The Spirit, after this run, never looked back, topping Park 25-18 as Jack Hubbard led the way with 3 kills in the set. Set 3, was likely the best set of volleyball from the team all day, with several highlight-worthy plays. Jack Hubbard again started the show early with two back-to-back kills. One of which was a fantastic tempo ball from Madduxx Goron, and Hubbard rose over the Park block, smashing it down the line. Hubbard went on to have 3 more kills to finish the set. The Spirit went up once again 17-7 courtesy of a great connection from Jacob Rangel to Owen Draeger, leading to 4 kills overall. Draeger and Clizbe played pivotal roles defensively, closing the block on several occasions and giving Park hitters simply nowhere to go.

Your OUAZ Spirit look to carry this amazing momentum into another GSAC conference battle against another in-state rival in Benedictine Mesa. The Spirit face the Redhawks on Saturday, March 21st, inside Faith Arena at 1pm!
