Spirit Continue Strong Homestand with GSAC Win Against La Sierra

Surprise, Ariz.-- Following Tuesday night's impressive victory over Viterbo, where the Spirit did not allow the Hawks to score over 15 points in a set, the team dominated once again. This time against a new GSAC foe in their inaugural year. The team outlasted La Sierra University in 4 with set scores of 25-17, 25-16, 19-25, 25-16. With their third win in a row, the Spirit now sit at (8-3) overall and (3-1) in GSAC conference play.

Henderson native Horatio Maumasi is taking the NAIA by storm with yet another double digit kill performance. The Junior who should be on every All-American watchlist in the country put up a staggering 14 kills on 17 attempts hitting an almost perfect .765. He also added 3 block assists and has been a huge factor from the service line with a wicked quick jump serve. Sophomore Jack Hubbard, put on a blocking clinic tonight with 5 blocks and now 11 in his last two games. The outside hitter had a great offensive night as well with 10 kills hitting over the La Sierra block on several occasions and making some crafty swings. Another Nevada native, Treven Clizbe had his most efficient night of the season with 8 kills on 10 attempts hitting .800 and 2 clutch digs in a great rally in set 1. Palomar College transfer Jacob Rangel, came off the bench in set 2 and dished out 30 assists steadily leading this offense giving an off night to Madduxx Goron. While another JUCO transfer in Kody Castellon, took over most of the libero duties tonight with some solid serve-receive and a tied team high 6 digs.

After a slow offensive start to set 1, the Spirit quickly picked it up late in the set. After being up 18-15 , the Spirit ended the set on a 7-2 run. Treven Clizbe, tallied some clutch kills, while AJ Scott absolutely lit it up from the service line with his nasty jump float. In set 2, Jacob Rangel took the setting reins and put up some great balls for several Spirit hitters. The Spirit took a commanding 19-9 lead, in which Horatio Maumasi put away 5 balls on a double block almost every swing. After a 25-16 set win, the Spirit offense slowed down in set 3 and let La Sierra take a solid lead early. After a 6 point run, the Golden Eagles found themselves up 14-7. However, the team battled back after Jack Hubbard subbed back in to get some life back into one of the best attacking offenses in the nation. However, the Golden Eagles did not slow down and pushed the lead to 20-12 again. A late Thomas Plaskett service run brought the Spirit within four at 21-17, but some tough swings gave La Sierra the set at 25-19. Coming into set 4, Coach Afusia decided to roll back with the starting lineup to bring some energy back into the game and they delivered. After being neck and neck the first couple points, the team caught fire on a 9-0 run forcing several Golden Eagle errors and running up the score to 18-9. Jack Hubbard and Horatio Maumasi again exploded in this set with a combined 10 kills that eventually overpowered the Golden Eagle defense.

Your OUAZ Spirit continues this homestand with another matchup in the GSAC against Soka University tomorrow at 6pm. Then will follow that in their final non-conference matchup of the year against WHAC powerhouse Indiana Tech on Saturday, March 13 at 1pm inside Faith Arena.
