Spirit Earn Two Wins in Strong Showing at Tucson Invitational

Tucson, Ariz.-- OUAZ softball had a great day at the Tucson Invitational, winning their games against Mayville State and Dakota Wesleyan. The wins move the Spirit to 13-7 on the season.

Game 1 — OUAZ 10, Mayville State 1

Game one started with an RBI walk to give the Comets a 1-0 lead after the frst inning. The score would remian that way until the 4th inning when the Spirit erupted for six runs. Savannah Sutton opened the scoring with an RBI double to plate Alexis Jimenez. Angelina Granado follwed with a two run single that scored Alexis Rodriguez and Elizabeth Luna. Nayeli Inzunza would then hit a bases clearing, two-RBI triple to knock in Sophie Jackson and Ashley Higdon. Brianna Humphries capped off the inning with an RBI double to score Inzunza, as the Spirit would hold that 6-1 lead until the 7th when the Spirit would tack on four more runs. Sutton started the scoring with an RBI single to plate Humphries. Adyson Creighton would get the pinch hit RBI single, knocking in Sutton. OUAZ would then use a baserunning play, which resulted in a double steal where Rodriguez stole home and Creighton stole second. Creighton would score the tenth run of the game on a fielding error by the Mayville State first baseman. Alexis Ayersman got the start and went the distance as she allowed one run on nine hits, while striking out 10 batters in her sixth win of the season.

Game 2 — OUAZ 8, Dakota Wesleyan 5

Game two had the Spirit striking first to get a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning. Humphries started the scoring off with an RBI triple to plate Elysa Moreno, before scoring on a Sutton RBI double. Ava Segin would get a two-strike, RBI single to score Sutton and cap off their first inning scoring. Inzunza would score on an error to start off the offense in the third inning, with Seguin getting the big hit of the inning, with a two-run double on a full count. A Sutton RBI single in the 5th and a Jimenez RBI single in the 6th would finish OUAZ's run total at 8. Dakota Wesleyan would plate five runs spread out through the game, with one run scored in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th, with a two run 7th to cap off the scoring. The Spirit would trail at any point in the game. Stephanie Cortazar would start the game, going the first four innings of the game before turning the ball over to Seguin, who would pitch into the 7th before Cortazar would reenter to complete the game. Cortazar's final line in her 5th win of the season would be five innings of 2-run ball on 7 hits, and four punchouts.

The Spirit will return home for GSAC play as they take on Benedictine Mesa, starting Friday, March 13th. First pitch f the doubleheader at Canyon View High School will be at Noon local time.
