Surprise, Ariz. — OUAZ Baseball continued its strong start to the 2026 season on Wednesday night, knocking off No. 10-ranked UBC (British Columbia) by a 4–2 final at the Surprise Spring Training Complex. The win lifts the Spirit to 7–3 on the year, marks their third victory this season against a nationally ranked opponent, and completed a two-game series sweep of the Thunderbirds.
OUAZ wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for three runs in the opening inning. Isaiah Nava crossed the plate first after Matthew Carter reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. Rolen Driscoll followed with an RBI single to center field to score Camden Knutson, and Chaz Clemons capped the frame with a run-scoring single to right to bring home Luke Padden and give the Spirit an early 3–0 advantage.
The Thunderbirds mounted a response in the sixth, pushing across two runs on a double and a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to one. The Spirit bullpen, however, kept the momentum from shifting any further.
OUAZ answered immediately in the bottom of the seventh. Camden Knutson delivered a clutch RBI single to right-center, scoring Nava to provide a key insurance run and extend the lead to 4–2.
Nava led the Spirit offense with two runs scored, while Knutson finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Driscoll and Clemons each drove in a run as well.
On the mound, senior right-hander Micah Del Rio earned the win after working 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out six. Brandon Enders was outstanding in relief, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings while giving up just one hit and striking out two. Tyler Johnson closed the door in the ninth, allowing two hits and striking out one to earn his first save of the season.
The Spirit return to action on Friday, Feb. 6, opening a three-game series against Oregon Tech. The series begins with a doubleheader, with Game 1 set for an 11:05 a.m. first pitch at Surprise Stadium, followed by Game 2 approximately 45 minutes later at Kansas City Royals Practice Field No. 6 in Surprise, Ariz.
