Spirit Earn Road Conference Win to Start GSAC Play

Glendale, Ariz.— After a tough sweep at the hands of #10 Westcliff last week, the Spirit came through with a huge rivalry victory against the team from Glendale 25-18, 25-19, 24-26, 25-21. The win puts the Spirit at an impressive 6-2 clip to start the 2026 campaign and open the GSAC with a victory. Since 2019, the Spirit are 17-1 against the Firestorm, with a current 7-game win streak.

All-GSAC conference middle hitter Horatio Maumasi provides another dominating performance in his already illustrious career. Maumasi tallied 15 kills on 20 attempts and hit a stellar .650 against a solid ACU block that was heavily committed on the junior. Sophomore star Jack Hubbard and Junior AJ Scott added to the cause with 11 kills. Both outside players performed exceptionally well, hitting over. 230. Anthem native and team captain Caeden Salmen not only contributed 9 kills but also led the team with 10 digs. Middle Hitter Treven Clizbe became a spark plug in set 4 coming off the bench to tally 3 immediate kills and notch 2 straight aces from the service line.

After a slow start in set one, the Spirit found themselves down three points, at 13-16. That's when graduate student Caeden Salmen came to the service line and absolutely flipped the momentum with a hybrid serve that gave Firestorm passers fits all night. After tying the game at 18-18, the Spirit ramped up, scoring 7 consecutive points, forcing several errors, and getting the ball to AJ Scott, who turned it on towards the end of the set. Set 2 was all OUAZ, as the team hit a .435 clip and took a big lead early, 17-12, led by Horatio Maumasi. After a rough end to set 3, where the Spirit had set point but had several errors to end the set, the team completely rallied in set 4. After a back-and-forth set 4, Horatio Maumasi delivered the game's final run from the service line that pushed the Spirit closer to victory. The team took a 21-16 lead following a service ace and a few Firestorm mistakes. They would go back and forth on points after that, until a Horatio Maumasi kill clinched a 25-21 set victory, giving the Spirit a 3-1 match win.

The Spirit will be back in action next Friday, March 6th, with a road GSAC clash against # The Master's. The match against the defending NAIA National Champions will start at 8:30 PM (MST) in Santa Clarita, California.
