After an offensive showcase on Friday, OUAZ showed both resilience and pitching depth in Saturday's twin bill, earning a 10-6 comeback win in game one before grinding out a 3-1 victory in the finale.
Game 1: OUAZ 10, Park-Gilbert 6
The Buccaneers struck first and held the lead through five innings before the Spirit offense came alive late.
Trailing 2-0 entering the sixth, OUAZ broke through with three runs to take its first lead of the game. Joel Esparza was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home the first run, Evan Mendoza followed with an RBI walk, and Alex Hurr later scored to give the Spirit a 3-2 advantage.
Park-Gilbert answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but the seventh inning proved decisive.
OUAZ erupted for seven runs in the frame, highlighted by Camden Knutson's RBI single and Esparza's run-scoring knock down the left field line. Mendoza delivered the biggest swing of the inning with a two-run double to right center, while Mason Whitehead and Matthew Carter each added RBI singles as the Spirit built a commanding 10-4 lead.
Whitehead paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Knutson and Rolen Driscoll each collected two hits, while Mendoza drove in three runs.
On the mound, Diego Quinonez gave the Spirit five innings, allowing just one earned run. Kasey Regala (4-1) earned the win in relief, tossing 3.2 innings and striking out four to close out the victory.
Game 2: OUAZ 3, Park-Gilbert 1 (7 Innings)
The series finale turned into a pitcher's duel, with the Spirit using timely hitting and shutdown relief pitching to complete the sweep.
Park-Gilbert took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, but OUAZ responded in the sixth. Rolen Driscoll delivered again, ripping a double to left center to score Camden Knutson and tie the game. Moments later, Rolando Ramos Jr. stole third and came home on a throwing error to give the Spirit a 2-1 edge.
OUAZ added an insurance run in the seventh when Kasey Regala advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored to push the lead to 3-1.
Jackson Brenna started on the mound and struck out four over three innings, allowing just one run. Tyler Johnson (2-0) was dominant in relief, tossing four shutout innings without allowing a hit while striking out four to secure the win.
The Spirit finished the weekend a perfect 4-0 in GSAC play, showcasing explosive offense, aggressive baserunning, and strong bullpen performances throughout the series.
OUAZ will continue conference play at home on Friday, March 6, when it hosts Benedictine Mesa. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. (MST) at KC Royals Practice Field 6.
