OUAZ Gets Series Sweep Over Nelson (AZ)

Surprise, Ariz.-- OUAZ Baseball completed the series sweep over Nelson University Arizona on Saturday with a 7-3 victory, improving to 14-5 on the season while extending its winning streak to six games.

The Spirit struck first in the opening inning when Matthew Carter came around to score on a wild pitch to give OUAZ an early 1-0 lead. After Nelson briefly tied the game in the third, OUAZ answered in the fourth as Mason Whitehead scored on another wild pitch before Evan Mendoza drew an RBI walk to push the advantage to 3-1.

The game remained tight until the Spirit created separation in the seventh inning. Manny Morales brought home a run on a fielder's choice before Ben Ullyott delivered the key swing of the frame, lining a two-run single into shallow left to extend the lead to 6-1. OUAZ added another insurance run in the eighth when Carter again crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

At the plate, Carter led the Spirit with two hits and two runs scored, while Trevor Lesperance added two hits. Ullyott's two-RBI single proved to be the biggest hit of the afternoon, and Mendoza and Morales each drove in a run as OUAZ worked nine walks and consistently pressured the Warriors' pitching staff.

On the mound, Jackson Brenna earned the win in relief with 2.1 scoreless innings, helping stabilize the middle frames after Diego Quinonez's strong start. Brandon Enders followed with two innings, and Kasey Regala closed the door to secure the save. Despite Nelson recording nine hits, all three Warrior runs were unearned as the OUAZ staff limited the damage in key moments.

With the victory, the Spirit finish the series sweep and will now turn their attention to conference play. OUAZ opens GSAC action on Friday, February 27, with an 11 a.m. MST first pitch at the Tempe Diablo Spring Training Complex.
