Spirit Earn Two Key Sweeps in Missouri Valley Invitational

Marshall, MO— After a nail-biting five-set loss to Missouri Valley, the Spirit roared back with two sweeps on Friday afternoon in the Missouri Valley tournament. The first victory was against another Midwest program, Central Christian College of Kansas, with set scores of 25-12, 25-20, and 25-17. Later in the day, the Spirit defeated a first-year program, Hastings College, with set scores of (25-23), (25-17), and (25-20). With two games left on tomorrow's slate, the Spirit currently sit at a 2-1 overall record, with plenty of non-conference matches to go.

In the team's first matchup of the day, Coach Afusia elected to continue with the starting lineup in set one and then defer to rotation guys coming off the bench in sets 2 and 3. Now, Junior Horatio Maumasi, poised for an All-American-type season, performed efficiently as usual. The Henderson native tallied 5 kills on 7 attempts, achieving an impressive hitting percentage of .571. Setters Madduxx Goron and Jacob Rangel both commanded amazing offenses in both games while making it a priority to connect with pin hitters. Sophomore Jack Hubbard had an impressive day 2, going 10 for 15 with a .400 hitting percentage. Graduate seniors Caeden Salmen and Thomas Plaskett lit up the stat sheet. Plaskett went for a .500 hitting percentage, while Salmen, on a rest game, went for .400. Former national champion Treven Clizbe, along with senior Xavier Connelly, were perfect early in this matchup, hitting for .1000 and converting on every opportunity. Hilo native Ka'imi Kealoha also started sets 3 and 4, quickly making an impact with 5 kills and maintaining a steady .333 hitting percentage. After controlling the first two sets with an amazing .789 hitting percentage in the first, the Spirit fell behind in set 3, losing an early lead. However, after a Coach Afusia timeout down 20-21, the team was able to regroup and force tons of errors. Ka'imi Kealoha was clutch down the stretch with some important kills that forced sideouts and a clutch ace to give the team a game point.

After a short break, the team returned right back into action against Hastings College. The team yet again controlled the game from start to finish. Horatio Maumasi in this one had one of the craziest stat lines in the entire country. The middle blocker went a perfect 12-for-12 with a service ace. Maumasi continues to draw double blockers, but even that clearly has no impact on his juggernaut swing. Jack Hubbard, a sophomore, and Caeden Salmen, a GSAC All-Conference outside hitter, both ended the game with a surge of double-digit kills. Salmen added 12 kills, hitting .400, while Hubbard, one of the best underclassmen in the nation,v led the team with 15 kills. Treven Clizbe, who had been playing opposite yesterday, switched into the middle position and dominated. Clizbe tallied five kills on seven attempts and was a menace, blocking with three solo blocks.
