OUAZ Sweeps Park-Gilbert for 5th Straight Time

Gilbert, Ariz.- OUAZ completes the season sweep of Park-Gilbert with a final score of (25-16) (26-24) (25-18). The Spirit came into tonight's matchup with 4 straight wins over the Bucs dating back to last year and have not dropped a set to them in all 5 matches. The win today puts the team at an even .500 mark (9-9) with a (4-5) record in the GSAC.

Team Captain Caeden Salmen has been hot as of late and kept it up tonight in Gilbert hitting at .571 clip with a team high 13 kills. The senior will have a big task on Thursday evening as they will need his scoring against a high powered Benedectine Mesa defense. Henderson native Horatio Maumasi converted easily on his load management night with 5 kills on 7 attempts hitting at a .571 hitting percentage. The 6 foot 4 middle will have his hands full tomorrow evening against a gritty middle attack hence the reason for his lowered volume on Wednesday evening. Jack Hubbard quietly had an efficient night as well after taking a couple breaks in between sets for his load management night. The freshman garnered 9 kills and tallied 8 digs as well. Senior Abraham Romero took over setting duties for tonight's matchup as Jonathan Worden took the night off in preparation for tomorrow's big game. The Los Angeles native dished out a solid performance getting 39 assists and completely confusing a Buccaneer defense with his 4 successful setter dumps. Junior Ka'imi Kealoha came in late set 1 and played an overall terrific game. The outside dropped 6 kills finding the gap in the block on almost all of his swings.

The Spirit ballooned a lead early in set 1 at 17-10 which was led by the sharp swings of Caeden Salmen and Jack Hubbard. The team put away the Bucs immediately after back to back kills by Hubbard and some solid defense that held them to only 7 kills in all of set one. In set 2 following a kill from Ka'imi Kealoha, OUAZ saw themselves up 18-11. However, the Bucs slowly crept back into the game as the Spirit took their foot of the gas a little bit. Following a 24-20 OUAZ set point, the Buccaneers scored 3 unanswered after two Spirit errors. Coach Afusia then took a quick timeout to regroup the team and get a quick sideout which was the immediate result. Jack Hubbard who was subbed out of the game entered back in and scored right away giving the Spirit yet another set point. Owen Draeger then closed any Park-Gilbert comeback with a stuff block to end the set and give the Spirit a 2-0 lead. Set 3, the Spirit returned to their dominant form jumping to a 22-13 lead that was led by some crafty swings from Ka'imi Kealoha and Xavier Connelly. The Buccaneers were able to tally a couple points to close the gap, but that eventually fizzled out with a couple errors and service error to end the game at 25-18.

For the final time in the regular season, your OUAZ men's volleyball team will face #6 Benedectine Mesa in a huge playoff implicating matchup. The game will be tomorrow Thursday, April 10th at 6:00pm inside Faith Arena. This will also be the team's senior night honoring our seniors before the match, so please get to the game early if you are joining the festivities. The game will be streamed on the GSAC Sports Network.
