Spirit Split Doubleheader in Opener Against ERAU

Prescott, Ariz.- OUAZ Softball split the doubleheader to open their four game series against Embry-Riddle Prescott, with a game one win of 5-2 and a game two loss of 7-8. The split puts the Spirit at 23-13 overall and 3-7 in the conference.

In game one, the Spirit used a four-run fourth inning to lift themselves past the Eagles. Elysa Moreno had a great day at the plate as she went 4/4 with an RBI, while Nayeli Inzunza contributed to the victory as well with a 2/3 performance that saw her scoring a run and knocking in an RBI. In the circle, OUAZ was backed by a strong seven-inning performance by freshman pitcher Stephanie Cortazar. She threw a complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out three batters in today's winning effort.

Game two started put well for the Spirit as they held a 7-2 lead going into the bottom of the 6th inning, but a five-run Eagle 6th tied the game and set them up to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh to force the split for the doubleheader. Isabella Rodriguez had a productive day at the plate as she hit 2/3 with a walk, while also scoring three of the Spirit's seven runs in the game. Alexis Jimenez and Mia Casadei both had solid days at the plate as they each knocked in two runs for the Spirit, setting them up to close game two out. Alexis Ayersman started the game for the Spirit and went three innings, allowing just one run on three hits with three strikeouts as well. OUAZ would make a pitching change in the fourth, bringing in the game one starter Cortazar who gave up seven runs on nine hits with 6 of the seven runs coming in the 6th and 7th inning, and ultimately resulting in an Eagles walk-off win.

The Spirit will finish their series against ERAU on Monday as they had to postpone their contests on 04/04 due to inclement weather, with first pitch from Prescott scheduled for 2PM. The Spirit will then finish the week with their final home series of the regular season, when they take on Park Gilbert, where Saturday, April 12th will be Senior Day for softball, and first pitch will be at NOON (MST).
