Spirit Split Doubleheader to Open Series Against ACU

Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ splits the doubleheader against ACU, leaving their record at 30-17 overall as they look to close out the regular season tomorrow. With that split and a loss by The Master's, the Spirit have locked in a top-three seed and will play ACU in the first round of the GSAC Tournament. The outcomes of tomorrow's games against the Firestorm will determine who will be the two-seed and who will be the three-seed.

Game one ended in an 11-6 loss at the hands of the well respected ACU offense.

OUAZ jumped ahead early with two runs in the first inning and one in the second. Nicholas Lustig roped an RBI triple in the first to score Logan Meyer. Joel Esparza recorded a team at bat with an RBI groundout. Gabe DeJesus added another run in the second inning with an RBI groundout of his own. OUAZ was then held scoreless until the eighth inning when they added two more runs in a comeback attempt. Christian Powell and Owen Prendergast both had RBI's in the eighth. Nano Perez singled in one more run to cap things off in the ninth inning.

The pitching for OUAZ couldn't quite hold in game one. Zach Hangas went 4.1 innings while allowing 6 earned runs to get things started. Brayden Marcum tossed 1.1 shutout innings and Hayden Schooler also recorded a shutdown inning.

Game two went OUAZ's way by a tight score of 5-3 in a well played game on both sides.

OUAZ fell behind early, giving up three runs in the first inning. The Spirit battled back with two runs in the third inning. Luke Hyzdu scored on a wild pitch and Nicholas Lustig recorded an RBI single. Dante Leach would steal third and score on a throwing error in the fourth inning to tie things up. Leach added another run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly and then Nicholas Lustig would score on a wild pitch.

The pitching for OUAZ was great in game two. Austin Humphres got the start and finished things himself. Humphres went all 7 innings only allowing 3 earned runs and striking out 10 while walking none.

OUAZ will close out their regular season tomorrow in a doubleheader against ACU. First pitch of game one will be at 1PM MST.
