OUAZ Outlasts Jamestown Following Late Deficit

Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ takes down Jamestown in a 5 set thriller that ends (25-21) (25-23) (28-26) (25-20) (15-12). The Spirit overcame a late set deficit put on by the Jimmies and picked up the win putting them at an even (7-7).

Jack Hubbard started cooking with gas as the game went on and had a tied team-high 14 kills along with 5 block assists. The freshman who has started each game this year has the potential to become a future superstar not only in the GSAC, but the country. 6 '5 opposite Corey Johnson dropped 14 kills and his serve was firing on all cylinders all night causing tons of trouble for Jamestown's backrow. Henderson native, Horatio Maumasi had the most efficient night of the Spirit with 13 kills hitting at a .409 clip. Maumasi was also dealing a tough jump serve all night that got him 2 service aces. The 6 '4 middle was closing blocks and getting to the pin at a quick rate notching 8 block assists as well. Caeden Salmen added to the offensive barrage with 10 kills on a .308 hitting percentage while recording 2 aces to go along with it. Defensively Owen Draeger had likely his best performance of the season. Draeger had a game high 10 blocks and in one instance in set 3 had 2 in a row. Draeger's defensive production has made him an instant impact player and definitely a front runner for the GSAC's freshman of the year. The Temecula native, is making quite the difference as a freshman and with more experience could definitely be among the best in the country.

OUAZ started set 1 with some fire going up 8-3 immediately following a highlight level solo block from Jack Hubbard. Later in the set, the Spirit went up 20-15 allowing Coach Afusia to change up the lineup and get some depth players late in the set. Jack Hubbard ended the set with a tool kill to give the Spirit an easy first set win. Set 2, saw the Spirit change up the lineup and start with Xavier Conelly at the middle position. The Jimmies caught the Spirit napping a little and started the set with a 10-5 lead following a set where they hit just under .200. After going down 19-15, the Spirit climbed back in the set after taking their foot off the gas. The Spirit were able to tie the game at 23-23 after a sweet crossbody swing from Owen Draeger. However, after a missed serve, the Jimmies were able to sneak away with set 2, getting a set sealing block to end it . In Set 3, the Spirit once again allowed Jamestown to make the game interesting and cause some chaos after completely controlling set 1. The starting lineup was back in the game, however the Spirit were seeing a lot of the Jimmie points coming from their own errors. Jamestown did a great job forcing many of these errors, but were simply not overpowering the Spirit in any statistical level. The Jimmies again started the game with a 10-5 lead, but saw the lead shrink to as low as 2 late in the set. Following a 4-1 run with 2 Spirit errors, Jamestown sat with game point at 24-20. OUAZ did not go away, Junior Ka'imi Keoloha came into serve once the Jimmies missed a serve putting the lead at 24-21.Owen Draeger took over the game here, forcing the Jimmies into a hitting error then getting back to back stuff blocks to put the Spirit at game point 25-24, completely flipping the entire set. Jack Hubbard came inches close to ending the set following a line swing that nearly missed the line. Jamestown eventually took the lead at 27-26, then got another set sealing block to take away another set and put the Spirit into a deficit. Coach Afusia preached immediate change and pushed OUAZ hitters to get their feet to the ball and swing away from the block. The team made the right changes and immediately took over. A big set from the Spirit's pins put the game at an unreachable 22-14 margin. The Jimmies made a late set push, but were not able to overcome the big margin and eventually fell 25-20. The final set was much more back and forth compared to the rest of the game where one team truly took over. A neck and neck set eventually saw the Jimmies take a late 12-11 lead, however the Spirit ended the game on a 4-0 run. Jack Hubbard and Horatio Maumasi had two clutch kills, while Corey Johnson's pin blocking forced the Jimmies ino two errors eventually ending the game at 15-12.
