OUAZ Falls in Tight Doubleheader Against HIU

Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ suffers two hard fought losses against HIU today in GSAC conference play.

The Spirit fell in game one by a score of 14-11 in 11 innings, an absolute heartbreaker.

The Spirit offense got things going in the fourth inning scoring two runs on a Mia Casadei homer as she continued her great work at the plate. HIU responded immediately with 6 runs of their own. OUAZ put up a 3 spot after giving up 6 to battle back. Serena Shine, Alexis Jimenez, and Mia Casadei all had RBIs in the inning. The Spirit added another in the seventh on a Mia Casadei RBI single scoring Serena Shine. In the bottom half of the ninth inning, Mia Casadei continued to have the game of her life with a 2-run homerun to tie the game. Elysa Moreno knocked in a run to keep OUAZ alive in the tenth inning. The Spirit would fight back in the eleventh with 2 runs but ultimately fall just short. Yet again, Mia Casadei recorded an RBI knock and Sophie Jackson came off the bench with an RBI single of her own, both in the eleventh inning.

The pitching for OUAZ tried their best being pitted against a formidable HIU offense. Alexis Ayersman went 4.1 innings giving up 5 earned runs. Stephanie Cortazar came in after Ayersman, going 6.2 innings and surrendering 5 earned runs, not being helped by her defense.

Game two ended in another close loss, this time by a score of 9-7.

Leila Elias didn't have her best stuff in this one. With the start she tallied 3.1 innings while giving up 10 hits and 7 earned runs. Stephanie Cortazar came on in relief and went 3.2 innings only allowing 1 earned run to score, giving her team a chance to comeback.

OUAZ will need to bounce back quickly as they face HIU again tomorrow in another doubleheader. First pitch of game one will be at 12PM MST at Willow Canyon High School.
