OUAZ Sweeps Park-Gilbert For Fourth Straight Time Dating Back to Last Season

Surprise, Ariz. - OUAZ takes care of business against Park University-Gilbert (25-16) (25-20) (27-25). The Spirit remain in contention with the other top teams in the GSAC following a win that puts them at (6-6) on the year and (2-2) in the GSAC. The team also continues its impressive record against them with its 4th straight sweep dating back to last year.

Sophomore Horatio Maumasi was quite heavily fed the ball in tonight's matchup and converted at a high percentage. The 6 foot 4 middle hitter, who absolutely flies on attacks, garnered 11 kills on a .556 hitting percentage. While also getting an ace and consistently putting the Buccaneers out of system with his nasty jump serve. Team captain Caeden Salmen, had another night single handley putting the team back into the game. The Anthem native, notched 11 kills hitting at a .571 clip. For the second game in a row, Salmen killed it from the service line with his hybrid serve which brought the Spirit back from a deep margin in set 3. Salmen ended the night with a team high 3 aces. Jack Hubbard in limited time tonight, due to a back to back had a solid performance putting away 8 of the 12 balls he was set. The freshman also kept his hot serving well and alive tonight tallying a service ace. Liberty HS grad Bodhi Bettes had a stellar performance defensively, as the sophomore got 16 digs and put together a consistent game in service receive as well.

The Spirit started the game off hot scoring on all cylinders and limited Park to 8 kills and a .048 hitting percentage the entire set 1. The team pushed the score to 8-1 immediately right of the gate, then following a string of errors pushed the lead to double digits at 16-6. Following a Park run that saw them score 5 in a row, the team finally shut the door on the set after a Jack Hubbard swing that went over the block causing a touch. Set 2, was more of a closer game until the end of the set where the Spirit found their rhythm. Caeden Salmen and Horatio Maumasi stepped up huge in the set delivering some clutch sideout kills. After going up 22-20, OUAZ forced the Buccaneers into 3 straight errors which ended the set. Set 3, was much less smooth for the Spirit after they had a rough start that saw them go down into a deep margin late into the set. However, some down the stretch heroics by Caeden Salmen brought the lead back. After going down, 20-14 the clear way to get a sideout was to go to Horatio Maumasi who absolutely delivered with two straight kills. Following this, Caeden Salmen put on an amazing service run which saw him score an ace then push Park into two straight errors due to off course passes from his tough hybrid. Both teams had several set points but did not end up converting. Finally at 25-25, the Spirit were determined to put the set away. After a Caeden Salmen kill, Bodhi Bettes scored a clutch service ace from a float that went right thru the Park outside hitter's hands. With game point once again, the Spirit pushed the block to the outside and got a game winning stuff block courtesy of Corey Johnson and Horatio Maumasi.

Your OUAZ Spirit continue their back to back tomorrow night in Mesa against #6 ranked Benedictine Mesa RedHawks at 6:00pm. The game will definitely be the premiere matchup in all of the NAIA and will be featured on the GSAC Sports Network.
