OUAZ Lose to Hope in First Game of Roadtrip

Surprise, Ariz.- The OUAZ men's basketball team traveled to Southern, California to take on Hope International, this Thursday evening. The team fell short to a high scoring Royals team 62 to 76 putting them at (8-16) overall and (1-9) in GSAC conference play.

West Linn native Zeke Viuhkola, led all Spirit scorers with 16 points scoring 12 of those points from three. The junior, a clear threat from three shot an efficient 4-6 from behind the arc. The guard is making quite the case as one of the top guards in the GSAC and should be a name to watch as an all conference player. Reggie Orr, has been another rising star for the Spirit squad dropping 15 points on a great shooting night going 4-5 from the field. The Nelson transfer also consistently was able to draw fouls and get to the line going a perfect 7 of 7 from the charity stripe. The 6 foot 3 guard continues to turn heads showing great strides on both ends of the court. Big man Jack Galiardi also put together a nice night, scoring 9 points. Defensively, the Shoreline, Washington native notched a steal, 2 blocks, and hauled in 6 boards. Galiardi, when on the court, is a great rebounder, and a clear threat in the paint.

The Spirit overall had a great night shooting going 47% from the field overall. However, the struggles from three held the team back from its usual offensive form. The team was also able to get to the free throw line consistently, but wasn't able to convert consistently going 12-19. Defensively, the Spirit held the Royals to only 11% from three. The Royals followed that defensive performance with some of their own winning the turnover battle 14 to 6. Going into halftime, the Spirit were in a close game like they have been in several games all year. The Royals just unfortunately came out of halftime on a roll starting the second half on a 12 to 6 run. The Royals were still not able to pull away, only maintaining single digit leads. The Spirit were able to cut into the lead on several occasions, but couldn't get a stop defensively exchanging baskets with Hope. Around the 6 minute mark is when the Royals pulled away with their biggest lead of the half to that point, after draining only their second three of the half.

The Spirit look to rebound in this Southern California road trip on Saturday, February 8th at 3pm against the Life Pacific Warriors at Mehl Court in San Dimas. This game will be streamed on the GSAC Sports Network for those that would like to watch virtually.
