OUAZ Wins Big in Historical Night versus Soka

Surprise, Ariz- OUAZ men's volleyball rebounds tonight after two tough losses against ranked programs. The Spirit took on Soka University winning comfortably (25-8) (25-11) (25-10). The team showcased history tonight shattering the record of aces in a game with 16.

Sophomore Horatio Maumasi played huge tonight garnering 7 kills hitting .600. Maumasi proved his versatility and all around play getting kills from opposite and middle tonight. The sophomore was a huge addition last year and continues to put the NAIA on notice with his incredible play. Phoenix native Jack Hubbard had a great night with 7 kills and a nice angle bounce to end set 2. Corey Johnson continues his hot streak with 6 kills and an impressive serving streak that went on for 6 points that earned him 3 aces as well. A load management night for several OUAZ starters gave several underclassmen the chance to compete and make quality plays. Greenway HS grad Gavin Shipman set lights out in his debut, netting 8 assists and 1 service. Hawaii native Ka'imi Kealoha started 2 sets with 3 kills to go with 2 aces. Xavier Connelly, who started a game in last years nationals, provided a quality game with 3 service aces and a 10 foot cross body bounce.

The Spirit overwhelmed the Lions in all facets of the game tonight. Defensively, the Spirit held Soka to a negative -.146 hitting percentage only allowing them to get 6 kills all game. From the service line the team absolutely cranked serves applying tons of pressure on opposing passers. The service pressure allowed the Spirit to lead 17-2 at one point in set one. This led to an all-time program high 16 aces. Offensively, the team scored at will with a .500 hitting percentage. A complete team effort, was exactly what Coach Afusia was looking for, in the Spirit's first win and his first win at the helm of the program.

The contest tonight gives the team serious momentum heading into a 2 and a half week hiatus. The team returns to action Thursday, February 28th against Westcliff University at 7pm in Irvine, California. This game marks the start of a long two weeks for the team as they will compete in 6 games in 8 days in the beginning of March. All games will be streamed on the GSAC Sports Network.
