Spirit Continue Undefeated Season With Road Win Against Ranked Opponent

Crowley, Texas- OUAZ went down south to Texas for their highly anticipated matchup against #24 ranked Texas Wesleyan. The Spirit scored 21 unanswered late after trailing 35-21 to secure the 42-35 victory. This matchup had clear playoff implications and gives the Spirit an (8-0) record, with a (7-0) record in the SAC. The team remains one win away from securing a playoff berth and bringing a SAC championship back to Surprise.

Stars typically shine the brightest in moments with immense pressure. Quarterback Luke Giron is undoubtedly a star, but shined in what is likely one of the biggest games of his career. The senior from Houston absolutely stole the show accounting for five Spirit touchdowns. Giron showcased his air attack from the beginning of the game, connecting with his two favorite targets, Matthew Hicks and Marques Reese. We saw plenty of times during this game, Giron break contain and either throw a strike or shred the defense with his feet. Despite the presence of a QB spy, Giron consistently outperformed the Ram defense. His biggest run of the game came early in the second, breaking the pocket and taking off juking one defender in open space before cutting down the middle for a 50 yard rushing touchdown. When you would think a play is over, Giron would completely fool you either juking defenders for a positive gain or avoid a clear sack by getting back to the line of scrimmage. The senior concluded the contest with 20 carries for 105 yards, establishing himself as the leading rusher overall, while accumulating 299 yards and four touchdowns through the passing game. Marques Reese caught two of Giron's touchdowns and combined with Matthew Hicks for 156 yards. Late in the fourth, Frankie Valentino had a huge pass play, catching a 41- yard touchdown right through the middle of zone defense.

The top defense in the NAIA faced a significant challenge against one of the top offenses in the SAC; however, Coach D kept this defense disciplined and positioned them exactly where they wanted to be. The secondary maintained its composure against a robust passing attack, scoring a touchdown of its own to give the Spirit a late lead in a close game. The headline of the game was this zone defense that forced Texas Wesleyan quarterback Cole Francis to make three interceptions. The most significant moment occurred approximately 8 minutes into the fourth quarter when cornerback Clayshaun Davis successfully undercut a ball on a short hitch route and returned it 50 yards for the score. Davis immediately read the quarterback's eyes and, with great anticipation, made a play on an underthrown ball. Braden Robinson and Alex Cordova also found themselves with interceptions off great reads. Justice Sosnicki and Tyler Ivy led the team in tackles with six and were noticeable on every snap, setting the tone defensively. They were able to shut down rushing lanes and rally to the football on a regular basis because of their speed, discipline, and playreading skills. The entire front seven won the line of scrimmage and forced the quarterback to make snap decisions, causing constant confusion in the backfield. The secondary profited from rushed throws and shattered timing routes as a direct result of that pressure, which created numerous interception opportunities.

Today's comeback victory will give your OUAZ Spirit a chance to lock down the conference next week! The team returns home next week on Saturday, November 15 to face Louisiana Christian at 7pm and will honor its second group of amazing seniors. Stay up to date on all things OUAZ Athletics at ouazspirit.com and follow the Spirit on Twitter (X) at @OUAZSpirit and Instagram at @ouazspirit.
