Spirit Fall in Five Sets to No. 11 The Masters

SURPRISE, Ariz. — The OUAZ women's volleyball team put on a gutsy performance against No. 11 The Master's University, taking the nationally ranked Mustangs to a five-set battle in front of an energized home crowd. The Spirit showed poise, power, and resilience throughout the match, winning two hard-fought sets and keeping the pressure on one of the GSAC's top programs from start to finish.

  • Set 1 (25-22): The opening set against the Mustangs was an intense back-and-forth battle, with the Spirit rising to the occasion and claiming the early lead. Lauren Wamsley set the tone with a dominant performance, recording seven kills and an ace, while Reegan Shoquist added another ace to fuel the Spirit's momentum in a strong start.

  • Set 2 (24-26): The second set was another hard-fought contest, with both teams trading points in long rallies. Despite the Spirit's effort, the Mustangs managed to edge out the win. Shoquist stayed sharp from the service line with another ace, Kaiden Raif chipped in one as well, and Jessica Pearce added three kills to keep OUAZ in the fight.

  • Set 3 (17-25): The Mustangs took control in the third set, maintaining steady pressure throughout. Nina Peay and Pearce each tallied three kills, but the Spirit couldn't find enough rhythm to close the gap as The Master's extended their lead.

  • Set 4 (28-26): The Spirit showed their resilience in the fourth set, battling back with determination to win a close and thrilling frame. Ana Newcomb delivered a timely ace to swing momentum, while Wamsley powered the attack with six kills. Peay added three kills of her own as OUAZ forced a decisive fifth set.

  • Set 5 (13-15): The final set was another fierce contest, but the Mustangs managed to come out on top to seal the match. Delaney Wilson and Pearce each recorded three kills, keeping the Spirit competitive to the very end against one of the top teams in the nation.
