SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Spirit earned a victory on Saturday, defeating GSAC-leading Soka University of America 1-0 behind an early goal from Matthew DePaco and a resilient defensive performance.
The Spirit came out energized and in control, dominating possession throughout the first half and setting the tone early. Their pressure paid off in the 15th minute when Matthew DePaco found the back of the net off a precise assist from Jesus Torres, giving the Spirit a 1-0 lead over the conference's top-ranked team.
The second half saw Soka turn up the intensity, maintaining long spells of possession in search of an equalizer. But the Spirit defense held firm, staying organized and composed to preserve the shutout. The victory showcased the team's balance, discipline, and determination — a defining performance against the GSAC's No. 1-ranked opponent.
