Spirit Fall in Conference Home Opener to ERAU

By Jas Singh
Surprise, Ariz
- OUAZ Men's Basketball skid drops to five in a row as they lose 68-84, with a 16 point loss to in-state rival Embry-Riddle (6-9, 1-1). The Spirit's tough start to conference play continued even with five players hitting double figures. The loss puts the Spirit at (7-9) and (0-2) in GSAC conference play with still a lot of season left to play.

The Spirit offense which shot an impressive 48% from the field in the first half, was led by senior CJ Reed who scored 14 points, with a steal, and rebound. The Newark product has been extremely productive on both ends of the court and has proved to be a great transfer addition from Regis University. Nelson University transfer Reggie Orr added 13 points on (6-12) shooting with 4 boards and Cameron Thorne added a steady 13 points as well. Zeke Viuhkola transfer from Westmont continues to prove to be a bright spot scoring 11 points with 3 assists and 2 boards. Junior Hunter Richardson showcased his sharpshooting skills in an impressive performance, demonstrating why he is a key asset off the bench. The St. John Bosco grad went 4-for-8 from beyond the arc, with 2 blocks.

The Spirit, although shooting great from the field, in the first-half struggled to reciprocate that on the other end of the court, as the Eagles shot lights out with 7 threes and 63% from the field in the first half. Even with the 12 point deficit at half, the Spirit battled in the second half, but could not contain the lead that ballooned to 26 at one point. The Spirit struggled on both sides of the ball in the second half shooting only 38% from the field, compared to the Eagles who shot 59%. The rebounding total played a factor in the loss this evening, as the Spirit were out boarded 45 to 18. The Eagles also got several second chances from in the contest with13 of those boards being offensive.

OUAZ will look to bounce back as they continue conference play on Saturday, January 11th as they will travel to Southern California to take on a tough Master's University team at 2pm in the MacArthur Center. The game will be streamed on the GSAC sports network. Then, the team will return home to face Life Pacific on Thursday, January 16th at 7:30pm inside Faith Arena
