Spirit Get Shot at the Buzzer to Earn Win in Conference Play Opener

Gilbert, Ariz. – OUAZ Women's Basketball got a shot at the buzzer by Tiana Sledge to stave off a fourth-quarter comeback by Park-Gilbert (6-5 OVR, 0-1 GSAC), earning themselves a 79-78 victory in their first conference game in the newly aligned GSAC. The win gives the Spirit an overall record of 11-3 on the year, and they are now 1-0 in conference play.

The Spirit had a solid day offensively despite losing the turnover battle, 25-16OUAZ had a 46.4% shooting percentage from the field, and a 40% shooting percentage from the three-point line. The Buccaneers got major offensive contributions from the bench with 32 bench points, while also taking advantage of points off of turnovers with 26. Park-Gilbert had a one-point lead with two seconds left, but a shot by Sledge at the buzzer, gave the Spirit the victory.

Four Spirit players finished with double-digit points, led by Angel Addleman who put together a solid day with 15pts, five rebounds, and two assists on a 50% shooting percentage. Brianna Humphries added to the winning effort 11 points of her own but made her greatest contributions on the boards with 22 rebounds. OUAZ also got contributions from Sledge, who had a line of (14pts, three steals, and six rebounds), and Makayla Holthaus getting (14pts, and five rebounds) on the night.

The Spirit will return home for another conference match-up against new GSAC foe, Embry-Riddle (6-7 OVR, 1-0 GSAC), on Wednesday, January 8th at 5:30PM MST. They will then head back on the road to take on The Master's (8-4 OVR, 1-0 GSAC) on Saturday, January 11th at 1PM MST.
