Spirit Blank #19 Ranked Taylor in Series Opener

Surprise, Ariz- OUAZ baseball picks up a pivotal victory 9 to 0 in its opening matchup versus a top 20 ranked team in Taylor University. The win puts the Spirit at a perfect 5-0 start in the 2024-25 campaign. The Spirit, who were in a tight knit game, found a way to pull away after an offensive explosion in the 7th inning that resulted in 5 runs and put a huge blow into any comeback opportunities for Taylor.

The pitching was phenomenal and continues to be a huge bright spot to begin the season. On the mound today was Surprise's very own Austin Humphres. The junior lefty threw 7 scoreless innings with only 5 hits on his way to picking up his second win of the season. The southpaw also had 8 strikeouts and had Taylor batters puzzled all afternoon. The Spirit brought on Rainier HS grad Brayden Marcum to shut things down in the 8th inning. The senior allowed no runs on only 2 hits and one walk avoiding any trouble in two innings of work.

On the offensive side, the Spirit backed up another great pitching performance. Graduate Senior, Joey Winters led the way with 2 RBIs and one walk. His first RBI came on a sacrifice sharp groundball that scored Nicholas Lustig. Winter's second came on a hard double in the 7th inning that put the Spirit up 5 to 0. Logan Meyer, who has started the season on a tear continues his great performances with another great 3 hit performance that also batted in a run. El Centro native, Nano Perez had a big day with 2 hits and two runs batted in. 3rd baseman Owen Pendergrass and center fielder Matthew Carter both had 2 hits and one RBI. Both RBIs came in the huge 7th inning that had ultimately put the game out of reach.

OUAZ baseball continues its series with #19 ranked Taylor University tomorrow Saturday, February 1st in a doubleheader. The first game will start at 11am and the second begins at 2:30pm. Both games will take place at Rangers Field 3 and will be streamed on the GSAC Sports Network.
