OUAZ Announces the Addition of Women's Flag Football to List

Surprise, AZ - OUAZ Director of Athletics Kevin Steele announced today that Women's Flag Football will become the 32nd sport (15th for women) at the university. Set to begin play next Spring, OUAZ becomes the latest NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) collegiate program to offer the soon-to-be Olympic sport.

"We have watched the growth of this sport in high schools throughout parts of the Southwestern United States and believe now is the perfect time for us to offer it here to young women as they continue their education as student-athletes," said Steele. "We've begun our search for a head coach and feel confident that the Lord will direct us to the right person who will build a successful program on and off the field."

Women's flag football has grown in popularity the last five years. It's estimated that nearly half a million girls age 6-17 played flag football nationwide in 2023, and in 2023–24, 42,955 girls participated in high school flag football, a 105% increase from the previous year. It's been sanctioned by the NAIA, it will make its debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

"Our decision is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to enhancing the student-athlete experience here by broadening the variety of sports and providing opportunities for all who are serious about participating in an intercollegiate setting," added Steele. "Like our other programs, there will be an emphasis on Christ-like character, teamwork, skill development, and sportsmanship while pursuing a college degree."
