OUAZ Starts Season on Right Note With 23-1 Victory Over Bethesda

Surprise, Ariz.- OUAZ baseball comes out on top in an onslaught victory winning 23-1 in their home opener against Bethesda. Starting pitcher Austin Humphres set the tone early striking out the side in the first. Soon after in the bottom half of the inning Logan Meyer ripped a two RBI double down the third base line to get the scoring started. After the scoring started for the spirit, it never stopped. Humphres continued his stellar outing on the mound in the second, tossing another shutout frame and recording five strikeouts in the first two innings. Starting catcher Joel Esparza got things started for the spirit in the second inning with a lead-off single and was later driven in by Nick Lustig on an RBI single. The third inning continued Humphres great outing with another shutdown frame. Humphres efforts were assisted by third baseman Owen Prendergast who turned a slick double play to end the frame. In the bottom of the third inning Owen Prendergast got things started by drawing a walk and was then driven in on a Joel Esparza two out RBI double. Esparza was quickly driven in on a Christian Powell RBI single, which was followed by a Matthew Carter base hit putting runners on first and third. Nick Lustig then came in and drove both runs in to close out the scoring in the third.

The fourth inning started off a bit shaky for the spirit after Bethesda worked a lead-off walk and then singled. After threatening Bethesda managed to score their only run of the game on a ground ball up the middle that turned into a throwing error. In the bottom half of the fourth OUAZ began to break away and blow the game open. Logan Meyer started things off with a hit by pitch and was moved to third on a well executed hit and run by Ethan Hatch. After another hit by pitch center fielder Matthew Carter came up to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared them with an RBI double of his own, solidifying the Spirit's lead. Nick Lustig quickly drove in Carter and a few plate appearances later starting first baseman Joey Winters doubled to bring in another run. This was followed by more free passes from Bethesda pitching which all ended up scoring on an Ethan Hatch RBI triple to clear the bases yet again. Owen Prendergast concluded the Spirit's scoring in the fourth with another RBI double.

Pitcher Brandon Enders took over in the fifth inning and tossed a shutdown inning of his own. After a Matthew Carter single and a Dante Leach base on balls Joey Winters comes up big again with runners on, driving in two. Enders breezes through the sixth working an easy 1-2-3 inning. The Spirit managed only one run in the sixth on an RBI groundout from Justin Rodriguez. Eddie Torres took over the pitching duties for the seventh and tossed yet another scoreless frame netting OUAZ their first win of the season.

The Spirit had seven players record multiple hits. This included: Nicholas Lustig, Joey Winters, Logan Meyer, Ethan Hatch, Joel Esparza, and Matthew Carter. As a unit OUAZ tallied 17 hits and 8 walks in their offensive outburst. On the pitching side of things, the Spirit gave up a combined zero earned runs while tallying eleven strikeouts and only walking two. Austin Humphres picks up his first win of the season and Brandon Enders and Eddie Torres follow him with 3 shutout innings of their own. OUAZ will look to continue their great start tomorrow in a double header against Bethesda, with first pitch at 11 AM (MST).
