LE MARS, IOWA - The OUAZ women's golf team got its season started in a great event, participating in the three-round Northwest Iowa National Invitational. The 18th-ranked Spirit played in a great field of NAIA teams, and finished fourth at the end of the tournament on Tuesday.
The best round for OUAZ came in the middle round of the event, as they posted a 295, the third-best mark of the field. In the final 18 holes of Monday, Chiara Israng shot -1, and four Spirit players shot 76 or better to wrap up the final round of the first day.
Israng was the highest finisher for the Spirit, ending up in a tie for 12th. Following the 71 to wrap up Monday, Israng shot a 74 to finish in the top 15 on the individual leaderboard while leading the tournament with a pair of Eagles.
Jenny Kim finished tied for 20th, posting scores all in the 70s in each of the three rounds. Kim also pitched in an Eagle during the event, and was able to sink a team-leading six birdies.
Jessie Sporle also had six birdies, and finished 24th with her best round coming in the middle 18 holes (+2, 74). Jayda Sidney had a 74 in the second round as well, and would finished tied for 20th with Kim on the final individual leaderboard.
The Spirit will get back to competition at the end of September when they participate and host the OUAZ Fall Invitational. The first two rounds from the Sterling Grove Golf & Country Club is set for Monday, Sept. 30.
