SURPRISE, ARIZ. – The OUAZ baseball team entered Tuesday night undefeated against the Cal Pac, including a pair of wins over Benedictine Mesa in late March. While the Spirit trailed most of the contest, the team scored all seven of its runs in the final three innings worth of at-bats, and stole a 7-4 victory away from the Redhawks to take a season-series sweep.
BenU's Connor Coerper held the Spirit to just two hits through five innings, but once he came out of the game, OUAZ started to do its damage. The first four batters that the new Redhawks pitcher Luke Legumina faced all reached via single, which included the Owen Prendergast single that cut the deficit to one.
The Redhawks would score again in the seventh, but Nano Perez led off the bottom half of the frame with a home run to pull within one. Following the home run, Joey Winters and Nicholas Lustig walked, then Lustig eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Prendergast to tie the game.
The Spirit would take its first lead of the game, then add on two more in the eighth inning. OUAZ had four extra-base hits in the frame, as a Lustig triple, a Winters double, then a Logan Meyer double all drove in runs to build the lead.
Evan Massie was excellent out of the bullpen in the final two innings, seeing and retiring all six batters to earn the victory. Trey Trimble, Peyton Little, and Brandon Smith all had scoreless outings, and the pitching staff totaled six strikeouts.
Perez, Lustig, Winters and Meyer all turned in two-hit performances on Tuesday night for the Spirit. Those four, combined with Prendergast, were the first five hitters in the lineup, and were responsible for nine hits and driving in every one of OUAZ runs.
The Spirit will now have the remainder of the week off in preparation for the GSAC Tournament, taking place at Orange County Great Park in Irvine, Calif. OUAZ will be the fourth seed, and play fifth-seed Vanguard on Monday, April 29 at 10 a.m.
