SURPRISE, ARIZ. – Just 24 hours after a barnburner of a contest against Park-Gilbert, the OUAZ baseball team found itself scoring double-digit runs in a victory over the Buccaneers on Friday. The Spirit got its 10 runs in an unconventional way, walking 11 times and needing only seven hits for a 10-3 win.
Park-Gilbert scored first, bringing in a run in the second inning. The Spirit responded quickly in the bottom half of the frame, plating nine baserunners and nearly batting around the lineup twice.
The Spirit needed only needed four hits to bring in its nine runs, getting five walks and a hit-by-pitch to keep the basepaths full. In all, OUAZ scored runs on two wild pitches, a passed ball, a walk, and three RBI hits.
The tenth run for the Spirit came across in the sixth, taking advantage of two walks and two hit by pitches. A hit was not necessary to score again, as Logan Meyer scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch with two outs.
Meyer was nearly impossible to get out, as he had two hits and two walks in five plate appearances. Meyer picked up his two RBI in the bust second inning, singling up the middle to push the Spirit lead at the time to five.
Nathan Tarver also had two hits, and drove in a run with a single in the second. Owen Prendergast tripled once again, following up the Tarver hit with a three-bag blast to left center.
While the offense was beating the basepaths, Zach Hangas turned in another excellent start. The reigning GSAC Pitcher of the Week went seven strong innings, allowing just five hits and striking out four batters.
OUAZ will wrap up its three-game series with Park-Gilbert on Saturday, this time on the road. First pitch from Field 3 at the Tempe Diablo Baseball Complex is set for 1:00 p.m.
